Long Oilskin Coat
Oilskin is the ONLY totally natural fabric that is waterproof. It was
invented over two centuries ago by Europeans travelling to Australia on the
open deck of sailing ships. They begged or borrowed expired canvas sails and
covered them in tar. They were waterproof and windproof. HOWEVER, things
have become more upscale. Modern oilskin are made of finely woven cotton
fabric that is treated with lanolin oil ( the stuff that keeps sheep dry)
beeswax and tree oils . The great thing about oilskin is it BREATHES. You do
not sweat, as you do in plastic. Cuts a cold wind dead, and keeps out rain.
The lining is Flannel. A horseman's dream.

OK, when it gets really nasty out there, what you need is a genuine oilskin coat and oilskin hat, to save you from what nature has thrown at you. That's Colin with his new colt Ringo, during a California deluge. . And of course Colin is happy and dry. For $139 (coat) and $39 (hat) put a smile on your face! |

HOW TO SERVICE AND RE-OIL AN OILSKIN COAT.
1/ If the coat is moldy, soak it in a tub of water with a bottle of
hydrogen peroxide. Mold is a fungus Hydrogen Peroxide kills it.
2/ Proceeding now to re-oil the coat (if necessary!) place it in a
new tub of water, with a couple of tablespoons of detergent, and let
soak overnight.
3/ Hang coat on a clothes line and hose it with a garden hose, to
remove the liquid in which the coat has been soaking.
4/ When the coat is completely dry, lay it on a picnic table. Choose
a sunny day for this operation.
5/ Heat the can of reprooing liquid on a stove in a saucepan of
water, and then with a clean brush paint it on the coat, starting
from the top and working down
6/ Hang it back on the clothes line and use a hair
dryer on high heat and work it on the coat in long
vertical strokes. This will heat up the oil and drive it
deep into the cotton,
7/ Do not be alarmed if the coat feels sticky. Let it
dry for three days in an open area. The coat will then
finally be dry to the touch AND IT WILL BE COMPLETELY
WATERPROOF ONCE AGAIN, AND LOOK LIKE A MILLION DOLLARS!
NOTE: Oilskins should be stored in an open area. Never
lock them away for winter in a closet. Closed spaces
encourages mold.
NEVER PUT YOUR COAT IN A WASHING MACHINE !!!!!!

Short Oilskin Coat
Our short oilskin coat has a hood that rolls up and snaps when not
used as a hood, then becoming a comforting collar. It has pockets as
shown, and is lined with serge. There is a waist pull-draw and
side-warmer pockets. Totally waterproof. This is finely woven cotton
treated with oils and beeswax, which makes it breathable. You don't
sweat, as you do in plastic! Great for wind and cold, great for storms.
Stay warm and dry. This coat can be re-proofed after several years (see
Maintenance Section).
