Center-Fire Rigging

Center-fire rigging is an ideal way to set back the girth on a horse with sensitive skin at the elbow. Avoids galling. It is especially useful with mule, where saddles tend to slide forward. Extra long nylon tackaberry lacing, with buckle. Priced at $55.00 a pair.

Double Billet Surcingle

This is the style of SURCINGLE that is necessary to attach a pair of Aussie converters. Make sure holes are punch up as high as possible on this surcingle, so the converters can be placed as high as possible. A girth four inches shorter than normal is necessary with the converters, because the cinch ring is now lower. Sizes STANDARD or WIDE. Colors black or brown.

For those rare horses that have a reaction to neoprene (less than one percent of the horse population), we line girths with Merino sheepskin. Colors brown or off-white. Shown here is a traditional C and R girth. But we cover ANY girth. Cost $119, including girth. Sheepskin covered girth
The near side (the side from which you mount) shows the function of the traditional girthing system. The forward buckle of the girth engages the strap that is attached to the saddle. The strap that is attached to the girth goes up through the ring of the surcingle (the wide strap going over the the top of the saddle), and then goes back to the rear buckle. This gives opportunity to get tension on the girth, with a pully effect. No need to count holes. Get as much tension on the girth strap as is desired, then engaged whatever hole is possible on the leading billet. Our standard girth is neoprene with nylon appointments, as shown. Colors of girth brown or black.
The off-side view of the traditional Australian girthing system. The forward billet is attached to the saddle, the rear billet is the end of the surcingle, that goes over the top of the saddle, down through a slot on either side of the outer flaps. This system provides an under and over purchase for safety.

Off-Billets

The OFF-BILLET is red latigo leather, lined with webbing on the hidden side, extremely strong. Total length 36", with holes punched on center at 2 l/2", from point to point.
Colors: Red/brown or black.

Tackaberry System

We have converted many of our saddles , that come with surcingles, to a unique Big D and surcingle combination, using the handy tackaberry buckle with nylon lacing. Takes the work out of girthing -- and eliminates anxiety for the horse.

Three Step for the hooking up the Tackaberry system

Step One. Hold the tackaberry buckle with the lip and tongue facing out. Then pass the pointed end of the nylon strap up over the girth ring, and pull it down the inside, then pass the pointed end of the nylon billet back out through the TOP slot of the buckle, so the pointed end comes out facing you.  Step Two. Take the pointed end of the nylon billet, pass it back in and over the girth ring for a second time, pull it down the back side, and then pass the pointed end of the strap through the BOTTOM slot, and pull it out with the tongue coming at you. Step Three. Now place the ring of the girth over the lip of the tackaberry buckle, and pull until the girth is at the desired tightness. The off-side is secured with the traditional Western off-billet, and remains fixed in place once the girth has been "leveled". The nylon tackaberry lacing moves smoothly once it takes tension. When the desired tightness has been attained, slip the pointed end of the strap down through the loops on the girth, and then double it back up so the pointed end is right there -- for a quick and easy release. Uncinch by pulling on the nylon, releasing the tongue from the hole, loosening the nylon until it drops so the cinch ring can be easily lifted off the lip of the buckle .THEN LEAVE THE TACKABERRY AND LACING ASSEMBLED ON THE SADDLE.

Colin's tip: Tighten the girth in three stages. This system requires so little strength, you can cause anxiety to the horse by tightening it immediately. Three easy steps, a couple of holes at a time, will be less dramatic for the horse. This system has been known to CURE "cinchy" horses, because it so passive if done correctly. And remember, ALWAYS ride out with a tight cinch. A loose cinch is a dangerous cinch. This tackaberry lacing is also great on Western saddles, for people who do not like tying the "cowboy" knots, that always seem to loosen, and always leave a bulk to catch your leg or the fender
